Sunrise Surprise – A Brief History
Sunrise Surprise began in 2014 by Guido Alchieri after a chance meeting with the band 2 Fat Men (Liba and Paul Greenwell), in the mountain town of Sauze d’Oulx in the Italian Alps. Like many encounters with these two, drinks began to flow, ideas were formed and then they started a band.
The group’s name came from the band of Alchieri’s daughter when she was only 14 years old. The songs were written for her first album by Alchieri but, unfortunately for her, he stole them back and they became the basis for the 1st Sunrise Surprise album – “. . . And Beethoven Begun to Play Mazurka’s”. The title is a phrase from Pino Pellegrino, Guido’s studio technician, because, after Guido had recorded two neoclassical albums, Pino declared, “Mate, it sounds like Beethoven is writing bloody mazurka music!”
So, in 2015 they started to arrange and record the album at Liba Studio in Turin. Along with Liba on guitar/vocals, Mr. Greenwell on drums they also recruited Italian American bassist James Stark and Andrea Braido – virtuoso guitarist of Vasco Rossi amongst many others – and a year later the album was finally released in March of 2016.
Almost immediately after the release of “. . . And Beethoven. . .” they started work on the next album which would be titled “Nemo Profeta In Patria”. This time around they enlisted the talents of bassist Carlo Giardina and drummer Fabio Brunetti (Greenwell was getting too old and fat so took a side seat and played games on his phone). “Nemo Profeta In Patria” contains 13 new songs and includes the singles In My Mind and Chicken In A Storm, and is released on 25th of July 2019.
Which brings us right up to date. The as yet untitled 3rd album is already in pre-production. So what can you expect? Something new? Well, obviously. Something old? Possibly. Something borrowed? You never know. And something blue? Damn right.
So, stay tuned for more Sunrise Surprise erm, surprises. Look for the videos. Search out the albums and enjoy the sunrise.
